There were also a number of singers I was supposed to despise in the early 70s because they were girly, but as the younger brother of sisters, I didn't get to control the 'gramophone' with or without woofers and tweeters, so i listened to stuff I didn't chose but still liked.

Of course even at that age, you can make your own mistakes and as glam moved towards it brickie rock and roll demise, too young for Bowie, I ended up with Mud, as inappropriately non glam as it was possible to be, but at least they lead me earlier in rock by way of this cover

Much of Mud's success at the time was based on Chinn and Chapman, a song writing duo definitely deserving of a retrospective on BBC4 some louche Friday. Even leaving aside Chapman's production work for Parallel Lines, they created an echo chamber of glam that gradually brought you to the great aspects, and there is this mad one off

And one of their other successes was someone who triggered in me those slightly weird things happening in the lower tummy that meant that despite my interest in music that others thought meant I was gay, meant I was pretty sure I wasn't. That said I wasn't fully cognisant with the semiology of androgynous then.

And similarly I got attached to this at the same time, even though the singer seemed to epitomise being a big jessie. It did trigger me to go and read the original poem at a young age and become a bit fixated on the Brownings. In turn that lead to a lovely holiday at Casa Guidi in Florence.

The dead rock stars thread reminded me of possibly my favourite Nick Drake track - Place to Be:

Pain, or damage, don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man, and give some back. - Al Swearengen, Deadwood.
