Now you've reminded me of the amazing Rodrigo y Gabriela

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj1rUJ8rIiE&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Also, another release I've been enjoying is the 5 album CD of early Sergio Mendes - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Album-Sergio-Mendes/dp/B005M4K6US

Includes a few good versions of Ipanema (a great jazz classic in the right hands......before everyone associated the song with elevator music).

I know what you mean about the second link, but I love the Arabic vibe.

Completely off tangent, but it reminds me of a great French Bond spoof: OSS 117.

It's weird, but because I associate the proto-Madchester bands with peers who were only a couple of years older than me at school, I've got this complete psychological block that prevents me from enjoying the music.

On the one hand I want to oppologise for being so irrational, but music is such an emotional and visceral thing (probably our earliest expression of art for the sake of art), I just can't help myself.

I suppose that the good thing about this thread is that, to some extent, we can set aside our differences and find some common ground.

At least that's what I like to think ;)

Professor,

Now you are getting back into the territory of the Rising Sun, but I know exactly what you mean about Kitt. The closest I could find is this:

For some reason I can't access that link. But now I'm about as intrigued as I would be if you told me you had a lost Derek & Clive recording.

Sass,

If they played that more in stores I might do a bit more shopping at Xmas.

As a family tradition I used to have to endure German Oktoberfest umpa music, but now I insist on a James Brown Xmas. Now Ertha  should really get a look-in.

I love the genius of Mad Proffessor & Lee Perry and their work together should be amazing...........but I just don' get it. It's listenable enough, but it lacks the structure of really good dub.

Now if you had said that the video was from the Rebel, I wouldn't have needed a clip. That film is practically burnt into my mind.........one of my favourites!

If you like Jazz and Dub, then you need to know about the Emperors New Clothes.

Not as Dubby as their sound typically is, but given how little known they are, this is the best I can do:

And if you want to go further and buy one of their three albums - but don't want to pay a fortune - check out the marketplace at discogs.com

She has never been out of Christmas memories for me. Remember seeing her on tv in the late 60's when I was a nipper. The song I saw her sing was

Have you seen this performance by her in 1991?

She is basically a memory of growing up. ;D

Goodness gracious Prof - if you're watching stuff like that it's no wonder you can't sleep at night!  ;) ;D

My sister and I sometimes used to go to a Sunday night disco at the Chateau Impney in Droitwich.
It was/is a wonderful place built in the 19century by a local industrialist, John Corbett, in the style of a Louis XIII chateau, for his wife who was part French.
Lucky lady..... forget the diamonds and pearls guys - just build us a house!  8)
Anyway, the DJ at the disco had this song as a kind of theme tune - it was always playing as we arrived....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsdTjuj6fps

Sorry, can't find any actual footage of these guys.

And we would often leave to the sound of this.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coh7n6dYj5Y

Now that's what I call dancing!  ;)

SweetPea,

Do you have the artists and song titles, as I can't view the links you posted?

It is weird that certain songs seem to be tied to venues. When I was a student the Union always seemed to play Sabotage by the Beastie Boys whenever I walked in:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coh7n6dYj5Y

Watching the video it reminds me of the hilarious Reno PD.

For anyone who watches Jooles Holland (Is there anything else worth watching for Hogmanay?), I hope you enjoyed the Soul Rebel Brass Band and previously unmentioned (and amazing!) Holly Cook:

Anyone would think you were sacrificing babies from that reaction.

You have however reminded me that I watched a documentary on Nirvana the other day (more brilliance from BBC4) and didn't appreciate how mutch Cobain was influenced by the Blues.

SweetPea,

Do you have the artists and song titles, as I can't view the links you posted?

Scara

The first link is: The Isley Brothers - This Old Heart of Mine
The second link is: Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Tracks of my Tears which is a bit of a favourite.... it's soooo poignant.  :)

You know, I don't mind the Beastie Boys. That track you'll be playing when walking your doggie has a great rhythm and should keep you warm on cold days.
Somehow or other you have posted the Smokey TomT link instead of the BBoys Sabotage link in your post last night.

Prof  ;D

Waking up:
1. Set alarm clock.... <groan>

2. When you wake up, while still in bed, try some stretching. Stretch then relax. Do this five times - it will help you to wake up and not feel too jaded.

Atheists Don't Have No Songs:

[Narration]

You know, religious people have such beautiful music and art;
And athiests really have nothing...

Until now!

A little tune called "Athiests Don't Have No Songs"

[Lyrics]

Christians have their hymns and pages.

(Hymns and pages)
Hava Nagila's for the Jews.
(For the Jews)
Baptists have the rock of ages.
(Rock of ages)
Atheists just sing the blues.

(Romantics play)
Romantics play Claire de Lune.
(Claire de Lune)
Born agains sing He is risen.
But no one ever wrote a tune.
(Wrote a tune)
For godless existentialism.
(For godless existentialism)

For Atheists,
There's no good news.
They'll never sing,
A song of faith.

In their songs,
They have a rule.
The "he" is always lowercase.
The "he" is always lowercase.
(Some folks sing)
Some folks sing a Bach cantata.
(Bach cantata)
Lutherans get Christmas trees.
Atheist songs add up to nada.
(Up to nada)
But they do have Sundays free.
(Have Sundays free)

(Pentecostals sing)
Pentecostals sing, sing to heaven,
(Sing to heaven)
Gothics had the books of scrolls,
(Numerologists count)
Numerologists count, count to seven,
(Count to seven)
Atheists have rock and roll.

For Atheists,
There's no good news.
They'll never sing,
A song of faith.

In their songs,
They have a rule.
The "he" is always lowercase.
The "he" is always lowercase.

Atheists
... Atheists
... Atheists
Don't Have No SONGS!

(Christians have)
Christians have their hymns and pages.
(Hymns and pages)
Hava Nagila's for the Jews.
(For the Jews)
Baptists have the rock of ages.
(Rock of ages)
Atheists just sing the blues.

Catholics,
Dress up for Mass.
And listen to,
Gregorian chants.

Atheists,
Just take a pass.
Watch football in their underpants.
Watch football in their underpants.

Atheists
... Atheists
... Atheists
Don't Have No SONGS!

We've lost a lot of talented artists this year, but the one that really had a big impact for me was Gil Scott-Heron.

Also, If I haven't plugged her enough, the amazing Alice Russell is on Jules Holland tomorrow night.
