Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me (Gavin Bryars + unknown tramp, 1971).

Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet is a 1971 composition by Gavin Bryars. It is formed on a loop of an unknown homeless man singing a brief stanza. Rich harmonies, comprising string and brass, are gradually overlaid over the stanza. The piece was first recorded for use in a documentary which chronicles street life in and around Elephant and Castle and Waterloo, in London. When later listening to the recordings, Bryars noticed the clip was in tune with his piano and that it conveniently looped into 13 bars.[2] For the first LP recording, Bryars was limited to a duration of 25 minutes; with the invention of the cassette tape, Bryars was able to complete a 60-minute version of the piece; and later, with the advent of the CD, a 74-minute version.

A favourite of mine for years - the version with Tom Waits (my musical hero) is just spine-chillingly evocative.

I think you should go and see a doctor about that ELO thing. It could be a nasty growth.

I'm admittedly a music snob and could easily give the most dogmatic jazz head or Norther Soul fiend a run for their money. But there is something compelling about a love for music that makes me respect anyone with such a passion.

The ugly flip side is that I'm deeply suspicious of anyone who doesn't like music or has a superficial interesin it - did you see 'Keith Alan Meets Nick Griffin'?

Not a huge fan of Keith Alan, but he does have a way of pushing people's buttons in a way that makes them more open than they would be ordinarily (not in the same league as Nick Broomfield though). Let's just say that the documentary was very revealing, but not entirely surprising.

The section on Griffin's musical taste was particularly interesting as it speaks to my views on people who have a very superficial relationship with music. Keith didn't make the connection but I think there is a link with his observation that Griffin lacks 'humanity'.
