Is anyone familiar with dance/swing music from the 40s?

I need to find some mid-tempo music for a funeral - so not too upbeat and not too somber. Anything like a Glenn Miller fire themed tune would be ideal (don't ask, it's a personal joke).

That is very cool. I had to watch it twice though, as the first time around I had Derek & Clive's nonstop dancer sketch going around in my head.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that's a bit too R&B. I need something that was a bit more commercial at the time - I'm not sure why anyone in the 40s would listen to anything but blues or jazz, but thems the breaks.

My only other thought is finding something good (i.e. something I like) from 1919.....the year of my grandmother's birth. Pity House of the Rising Sun wasn't written then, as I could have gone with an early version of that.

Looking back at music from the 20s and 40s I can easily find stuff that's still fresh today. It's just a pity my Nan wasn't into that sort of thing in her youth. To me the likes of Glenn Miller and Vera Lynn sound like the latter day equivalent to the trash churned out by the X Factor - what was she thinking?

Not really - but you tend to end up ideas like Moonlight serenade which has a funeral style I think,

American Patrol is "mid"

Re the music - being a DJ and, I can see, rather a perfectionist, you are having difficulty deciding what to play at the funeral.

You know what - relax into it - maybe even think about who will be attending the funeral and what they may like to
hear.

Your Nan will enjoy anything you come up with, I'm sure.

I think that's part of the problem........finding a balance between what other people will like and what I can endure. I am admittedly something of a music snob and I've rained on many a parade because I can't put up with music that is so bad it makes my skin crawl.

I think for much of his output - that's not an uncommon view, and I generally share - but move away from the greatest hits and look at the other stuff

Elvis died in 1977, Leonard Cohen didn't release this song until 1984.

I thought the time scale was wrong too,
I thought Elvis sang Glory Glory Alleluia and that someone did a tribute to him and used the music for this song for that tribute... But does it really matter?
I know for sure Johnny Cash did it and so many more modern day artists too.

I was not aware of the year of it's release otherwise I would have known that too.
But I suppose some of us have to make errors just so you can take delight in pointing them out...

It's interesting to compare the various interpretations, Buckley sings it as a lament, whenever I hear Cohen sing it it sounds more sardonic.
Sandra Burke , who sang it on X Factor has said she didn't like the song and that it did nothing for her, she certainly sang it that way.

Happily, I've missed X Factor - I think Cohen's version is the definitive, like Dolly P and "I will always..." but I have a soft spot for the John Cale version in the film of Shrek (the album was by Rufus W, apparently) which brings out the sense of loss

If you can't feel a song, don't bother - is my opinion
