I can't fully relax or enjoy myself in the pub until I've loaded the jukebox with my choice of music. I can't go to a gig or a club unless the music is to my taste........and when it comes to things like karaoke and x-factor that so many people enjoy - forget about it!

A lot of my friends find that attitude strange (if you love music, then you are supposed to get something out of most genres) especially when they have seen my record collection and think that I have a pretty catholic taste in music. Then again I think they are pretty odd for liking any old plastic fodder promoted on the radio and only buying one or two albums a year.


My teacher at primary school was an opera singer and my music teacher was an excellent teacher. I was in an all-girls group in primary school and we with the guidance of the music teacher performed before the school on a number of occasions.

We all wanted to be singers/actresses but life often gets you pulled off in other directions.  But music is a never ending source of comfort and mood lifter.
I think you just didn't get out enough or listen to enough music as a child.
The fact is that no matter how much we love music and different groups and musicians... we will never like everything any single artist produces.

That is life so I guess evolvement had nothing to do with music.
We created music...We did that....The Dr Frankensteins of musical sound.
The earth sounds being the first music.... Think thunder storms and rainfall etc.

As it happens I've always been surrounded by music. There was lots of happy-clappy interactive music at my primary school*, a strong music curriculum at my comp and my parents had a fairly healthy record collection (Beatles, Clapton, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac etc), but none of it really moved me.

It wasn't until I heard Soul, Reggae, Funk, Jazz and Hip-Hop that music really clicked for me. From then on it became an obsession.

*The negative association of music with religion probably didn't help.

How did you get a negative association with music and religion?

Many of the great composers have their music in Church Music.
What were you listening to? :o :)

My first introduction to religion was a school assembly where I was yanked out of the school hall and disciplined because I didn't know that I was supposed to bow my head and couldn't understand who everyone was talking to.

Understandably that resulted in a negative association with group singing and the sort of songs used during assembly - being quite a progressive school that included songs by The Beatles and Thin Lizzy. They weren't quite so progressive when it came to my non-belief.

Agree, Sass and Torridon about enjoying different styles of music. Scara has introduced me to some excellent bands and Prof..... I don't mind the 'mole' music - it actually sounds moley - should have been used in productions of 'Wind in the Willows'.

Today Edith Piaf has been playing in my mind...... have no idea why!!

It's weird the way that music can just lodge itself in your brain. I haven't listened to the Dap Kings for a while, but I had the groove from 'Nervous Like Me' going round my head all yesterday afternoon - long before actually hearing it in 'Henry's Crime'.

Professor - You can count me in a another big fan of Bernard Purdie.

Other than Reggae, Latin is my go-to on cold winter days.

The Dap Kings were the only reason Winehouse's 'Back to Black' and Ronson's 'Version' are remotely bareable.

Aside from 'Valerie' I'm not a big fan of Winehouse. She showed some potential on her first album and the production on her sophomore album outshone her vocal talent.

My biggest problem is that there are so many singers on the UK Nu Funk circuit that have more talent and deserve recognition. Having said that, I'll selectively load the pub jukebox with Winehouse in an attempt to render my weekends out Lady Gaga free.

I had trouble accessing the Paint it Black cover, but found it on the David Icke forum equivalent to this thread  :-\. It's not bad, but everything sounds better with brass:

That reminds me of the time that I did a funk cover Space Oddity for my music GCSE.  It was a bit like this, but Nowhere near as good:
