It's interesting the way that some bands really shine when playing live, whilst others are a bitter disapointment.

The studio stuff is very good, "The early Tapes" is my favourite and was a release of their early pre "first" album stuff

Live they are good, the audience last time was packed with musicians.....

Recent good live acts I have seen include Hard Fi and The Pierces - both better than expected

Hazel O'Conner too and best of all live, "Apart from Rod" how were terrific!

Listening to the rest of the POJ's first album whilst finishing some work on a project. The weird thing is that I really didn't like the album when I first heard the material. I instantly loved their remix and sophomore albums so I recently decided to buy and revisit High Steppin - now I can't get enough of it!

That sort of thing doesn't happen to me too often, but every time it does I think back and wonder 'what the hell was wrong with me and why did the music sound so different back then?'.

In retrospect the cats I've had over the years seemed to have emotional responses to different kinds of music. Music studies with apes and other intelligent animals would be interesting as well. I seem to recall a YouTube parrot that loved James Brown.

Good groove - nice and funky - a hint of that sound from the 70's with the horns etc, even a bit of Nile Rodgers style guitar licks - would have fitted in well in what we called the "soul box" at Uni in the 80's, where we mixed everything from EWF and Chaka Khan and Brit stuff like "King" and "Love and Pride" - god, taken back nearly 30 years, just like that!

No, Amazon is your best bet. Up until a few weeks ago UK sellers had it at around the £20 - £30 price range.

It's not that long ago that I used to rely on recommendations and reviews and needless to say that meant that I would end up with the odd duffer. Occasionally they would turn out to be growers, but for the most part they ended up in the resale pile.

That doesn't happen anymore, which means I have more funds available to by stuff that I know I will like. Anything I'm unsure about goes in my reserve basket for later consideration.

I often find the main problem for me is seeing someone live or on TV "live" of live and then blindly buying an LP.  I really like the Unthanks live, but I find the LP's too much!
