Just for a change .....

Cherokee Morning Song:

According to a comment on the video page, the lead singer is Rita Coolidge who is part Native American.

Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin' ....

Think the subtitles maybe in Finnish!

An old school friend's brother was friends with Stevie Winwood - I never got to meet him though (Stevie that is :D ).

Not my favourite version, but I'm loving that bass and Hammond.

Right now I'm competing to find the best cover of the song that keeps giving: 7 Nation Army.  Alice Russell & The Dynamics aren't allowed.

So far I'm on top with:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsgrkWseiYQ&feature=youtube_gdata_player

However I've got a soft spot for this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA8VqJYdayI&feature=youtube_gdata_player

The sound quality might be rubbish, but somehow everything sounds godd with a funky flute.

Hi Scara

7 Nation Army sound good ...... enjoyed the second link.

Re the Spencer Davies Group - Gimme some Lovin'. it's Stevie's raucous voice and yes, the Hammond that does it for me.

I don't know if you'll like this but it's funkier:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqlauwX_ums

Stevie on his own here, older, and his voice has mellowed.

Oh that voice, it reminds me of the back seat at the Odeon, snogging, Aero chocolate bars, coffee bars, where we did the twist.  A high tenor, I suppose, but bluesy.
They were the footprints of a gigantic hound!

Aero bars and back-seats in the cinema ..... those were the days :)

The thing is I preferred the edginess of his early voice and this is no where near as funky as 'Gimme Some Lovin'. It's just another one of those 80's power-pop tunes I'd sooner forget.

I know it's mostly down to nostalgia, but I'm still baffled by the way my generation is so enamored with 80s pop music. I thought it was rubbish the first time around.

Loving the Flack.

Just got back from a great funkpedition to Manchester and ended the night with this:

Just arranged to spend a few weeks in Rio this summer, so it's time for some Brazilian flavour:

I appreciate that and they don't do themselves any favours by starting out with a free-jazz flavoured sax solo. You have to wait for the drop when the groove kicks in.

Oh, and that was the short version. Before going out last night I caught up with the Craig Chares show and whilst playing the longer version, they just had to let play out ("I don't want it to stop" :) ).

I've always thought the guy was a bit of a tool, but he knows his music. I still can't believe it's taken me ten years to find a radio show that could be lifted from my personal collection. Now I know why so many people were upset about the proposed cancelation of R6 - if the closure of the BBC MBs was the cost, then so be it.

That's a great Beefheart track. Most of his output seems to be too much of a mixed bag for me to invest in any albums. But when I hear that kind of Funkadelic style of song (that track could have come from Maggot Brain) I wish someone would put together a compilation of the sort of stuff I might like.

Agreed - the loss of R6M would be v bad - I listen when WFH every afternoon and catch the odd evening prog too

I'm going to have to see what else R6M has to offer.

----------

Charlie Sheen has got nothing on Beefheart:

Its a strange mix - Radcliffe and Maconie are fairly main stream in a good way - other progs are more out there - its like a good radio station but without a play list

Just the way it should be. Gilles Peterson should fit right in and it will be great to see what he does with the additional airtime. It's funny that he was fired from one of his first commercial radio jobs for doing exactly what he gets paid to do on the BBC.

I've still got some recordings from his stint at Jazz FM and the controversy surrounding his show was hysterical. Jazz purists had so much hate for him that I was once refused custom from a hi-fi shop because I mentioned listening to his show.

That's hardcore - any particular one - one that offers the Linn Sondek by any chance?

I don't want to name names, but I did visit them because they were Linn and Naim specialists.

The funny thing is that they had Kenny G Albums in their audition library - a far greater crime than listening to a DJ who had the audacity to play hip-hop and other dance music on a Jazz station at 2 in the morning.

Proffessor,

In fairness he was pretty 'out there', so the MS symptoms could easily be mistaken for him being off his face on something. For the most part it would only be friends and family who would know the difference.

Watching him on Letterman my impression was one of an individual who has developed a left field world-view and was struggling to communicate in a mainstream environment. It was like watching two people trying to communicate using similar but very different languages (sometimes this MB can be a bit like that).

Everyone from Sa Ra to George Clinton, Lee Perry, Monk and even Prince run/ran into the same problem. If they didn't have a musical outlet they'd be shouting nonsense at people in Hyde Park.

Too true - though odd discs end up on demo lists - I actually found a very fwd mix of the intro to "Rio" by the Duranies and Phil Collins "I don't care any more" very helpful when I bought my Rega 3 in '82, indeed its still in use and opposite me now as I type!

I ended up with a R3, NAD 3020 KEF combo, now an audiolab 8000A with floor standers - works for me!

Speaking of music equipment, does anyone here know anything about samplers/sequencers? I've often thought I'd like to play around with this stuff myself but my daughter is now interested so I've got an excuse to spend the dosh.Any clues on an affordable way to start?

Sorry - not a clue - think you'll end up on another forum!

Nice setup FF. I always found the Rega to be a bit fast and loose. Despite the issues with maintenance I prefer the richness of the Linn and it can provide just as much punch with the right stylus.

It's a pity I don't get to use it much and I'll be sad to see the Linn go when I finish replacing all my vinyl.

At the time I could not afford the Linn and I found the Linn/naim set up too oriented to showing off guitar timbre rather than musicality of more complex pieces - still as I couldn't afford one  - I didn't care and with no maintenance - just my sort of thing. A number of reviewers if the time had their Ittok on a R3 to compare cartridges without having to worry about humidities (joke) and for having a standard base set up

I'm not binning my vinyl - buying some more - sounds soo good

I'd suggest an Akai MPC. I've got an old 80s model I still use when I do the odd DJ set.

Despite the fact that a lot of producers still use an MPC, I suspect that there may be better options now i.e. some kind of iPad and PC combo. I've used an MPC emulator on my iPad, so I can see the potential.

Seeing what Beardyman does with them, a Korg Kaoss Pad is probably worth considering. It looks like it can do everything possible with an MPC and a whole lot more.

FastFlint,

On the plus side Rega turntables work well with most equipment and genres, but I still think the LP12 is worth the effort. When you find the right setup for your taste in music, it just sings.

The Ittok R3 combo is very dynamic though and Rega's vinyl experience has helped them produce some amazing CD players. It's hard to choose between them and Naim.

I used to be a die-hard vinyl fan and thought that CD could never compete. I simultaneously reached a point where fewer and fewer new releases were being released on vinyl and I started to hear CD players that offered similar warmth to vinyl, but with even more dynamism.

Dwindling vinyl releases and new equipment that could trounce vinyl meant that a change of format preference was a no-brainier.

The best thing about the format change has been the rediscovery of albums I have overlooked or forgotten about.

I think I just like "feel" of vinyl - its never going to be convenient or popular - but there again I rather like early 70's 911's

I'm interested if CD's have a future, my IT chum tells me that the bitrate from digital donloads is now far in excess of CD's - now whether that makes CD obsolete is a mute point, wondered your POV?
