Something a bit old school now: Down River by the late, great and over here almost entirely unknown David Ackles (1937-1999). Going 'down river' is American slang for being sent to the big house. Chokey. Stir. Porridge. The lyrics tell the story, in one of the loveliest, saddest, world-weariest, most misery-marinated voices ever:

Pain, or damage, don't end the world. Or despair, or fucking beatings. The world ends when you're dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man, and give some back. - Al Swearengen, Deadwood.

Here's a jolly little number that I'm obsessed with at the moment as I'm arranging it for string quartet - Leopold Stokowski's arrangement of Bach's Komm, süßer Tod, komm selge Ruh ('Come, sweet death; come, blessed peace'). The text is a poem by an unknown author set by Bach in 1736 - a masterpiece of misery it may be, but what a tune. Probably not for the clinically depressed:

Anyone remember Focus?

Here's the Dutch progsters in 1973 cooking up a storm with Hocus Pocus.

There are few bands that are more quintessentially Glasgow than 'ra Minds and I might argue there is one more song or two that I might argue distill it better but the video is 35 years old now
