To be honest that sounds like someone pratting around with a stylophone. Then again, early electronic pioneers have greatly enriched the world of music.

Nah, she'd be too busy grovelling at his feet.

Better not - the chainsaw might take his feet off.

Why the dissing of other peoples taste in music.
Do you  realise music is the soul of the earth?
You should never diss other musicians or peoples tastes.

I had a burglar once who loved my record collection so much he came back a stole it again. ;D
Not a word of a lie... pink F darker side of the moon must have been a favourite and he took every vinyl that I had after the second time I decided not to buy them again.
Lost so many good albums and I even bought an alarm for the house.
Some copies can't get now.

Hi Sass - i agree - but as with ay "stamp collecting" type of human behaviour - you will alwaysget the "not a proper x" discussion - I mean it happens all the time on the religion forums!

I actually like a v wide range of music from Abba to Motorhead and many places in between  - I don't think that all the output of any band or person is all good, and I pick and choose

It is the same for all of us... we never like 100% of any musicians music. We have our favourites and like yourself... often a wide range on music choice. I like classical and some opera too.
Being in a church choir got me into the classical aspect. As a child I was learning french and the violin at Junior school where my teacher was also an opera singer and music teacher helped me form an all girl band in school.

God had a very good reason for music... it helps us relax and get through the tougher times in life.
Love many different types of music but I don't knock anyone for liking the tracks by famous artists I do not like. Kate Bush.., for instance... when I first heard her I was not keen then I heard a few lesser well known tracks at the time and I was hooked. Plus any woman found it hard in the world of music and she was talented, beautiful and wrote her own stuff. A woman like that deserves admiration and her music to sell. I have always been able to pick out hits since I was youngster.
If I heard an album I could tell you if any songs would make a number one seller.

Music is probably the best gift in creation that we ever had from God since the beginning of time.

I agree about the solo stuff - I can listen to the Style Council - but i suppose being I was 17 when going Underground came out - the move to smooth left me feeling rather cold too!

Trying to be taken "seriously"

I haven't been interested in anything he did after the Jam really and thought it served him right for not getting that Mercury prize for his conceited assumption that it was his by right. The look on his face was priceless.

Seconded

I recently saw "from the Jam" and they seem to play better and have more fun without Weller

Off to see them again next month

Saw Hard Fi at Bristol last night - good gig - they do a good job with the audience - small venue - they would get a bit lost at a big one

I am biased, sharing a home town........

Nutter!

Here's something from a PROPER  rock'n roller

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Nz9jR_AuLM&feature=related

And you criticise Level 42!!! that stuff's remedial  8)

I guess music is v personal in taste terms!

Well yes, of course it is

and it is also highly conditioned by the opinion of influential peers, advertising and culture. Sometimes you can dislike [or like] a piece due to nothing other than pure association/memories etc. rather than on it's own merits. Sometimes there are only one or two tracks  you really like from a whole body of work or you can find yourself inadvertently dismissing  really good tracks because of disliking a particular artist.

Tastes change and evolve  and sometimes I think that the art of listening to music is learning to play the right thing at the right time. A certain track can drive you nuts one day and at another time, you can't get enough of it. Conversely, you may be feeling a bit down and then find that a particular piece can completely lift your mood.

There is something mysterious about the power music that seems to connect to some kind of primal language that even very little babies respond to. Even though you see babies spontaneously jigging to music , I'm not sure that this is just to do with rhythm. It seems to be to do with pitch as well. I have sometimes wondered if it is linked to the way in which the human voice has to intonate as a part of language and in order to fully convey meaning. If you remove or alter intonation, meaning can be lost or misconstrued whereas intonation alone can sometime convey more than directly and precisely than words. E.g. Ahhhhhhhhrgh is an unmistakable personal message isn't it whereas an intellectual critique  is impersonal.

Perhaps the ability to intuit meaning from tone and rhythm is it is hard wired into our primal selves before we were pre-verbal and in order to understand our children. Or maybe it's something to do with the need to understand the sounds of nature ? storm coming etc. I seem to remember  something about 'the rhythm of the spheres' but I never really understood that. Bit too weird.

I mean, I wonder why it is that we associate bass tones  with dark and deep emotion whereas high tinkly tones are associated with light bright and happy moods.? Is it because angry or depressed moods can't be conveyed in a high pitched voice and you cant say ?I'm really deleteriously happy today ? in slow deep growling basso?

Mood affects the physiology in the body, you can actually hear stress, fear and upset, the throat constricts a bit and when you are happy and relaxed, the throat opens and the sound is altered. It is an involuntary effect of emotion that communicates itself spontaneously.  So I wonder sometimes if music is an extension of  our primal voice and of this emotional language than transcends all other languages and is why , as a primal/emotional language,  it is universal?

Some of the theories associated with archaeoacoustics are quite interesting - where you have deep resonant sounds associated with caves and cavernous structures used for spiritual purposes and the bright notes of ringing rocks associated with celebratory daylight rituals.

Hi Professor

Yes, Aged and Mellow... great song for a mature woman to sing
but I'm not sure 13 year olds, and certainly not 10 year olds,
should be singing such provocative material. Maybe wait 'til
around 18yrs?

If she's reading this I hope she comes back sometime.

I couldn't agree more. I can however understand why she's so despondent about the state of the forum.........with all the bickering and animosity my solution is to be very selective about the threads I join.
