Yes. in Australia, for about five minutes of abject terror, a yellow-bellied black snake, poisonous!

I would.  I've absolutely no time whatsoever for the institution of the Monarchy, but a (small, admittedly) part of the reason for that is that I don't think it does the Royals any favours to be caught up in that mess.  The Queen has done a sterling job with an absolutely poisoned chalice, and the saving grace for her time as monarch has been her capacity to keep the crown pretty much neutral in any internal UK/Commonwealth business whilst maintaining an air of being on the Commonwealth's side overseas.

I fear for the time her son takes over, because I don't think he has the temperament to do that, and the Monarchy coming under threat because the Monarch is a problem is going to be a lot more fractious than the Monarchy coming under threat just because it's had its day.

I think it will continue for this parliament and the next. It's a thing that annoys some on the far side of most parties but rather like the CofE, and indeed the monarchy, it would take a lot of time to change for very little political return. The market may enforce some changes though and I can see it becoming leaner.


I think the monarchy and relations is a gilded torture chamber for those involved.  There seems a sort of totemic use of them by the nations which is to me disturbing.

One thing that I have wondered about, given that Covid measures look like being a fixture into next year, is whether people will choose to maintain some of these measures even when the need for them goes - for example, when social distancing ends and crowds return, in stadia or busy streets/shops, I wonder if people will decide to continue to wear face-masks voluntarily.

No. I think the Labour Party is better off now Starmer is in charge than it has been for quite a while.

Yes. In France last year. I was  caught exceeding the speed limit in mid-July and learned about it two months later when I returned to England. If I payed my fine by October and by debit card I would be given a cosiderable discount.

Our second is in a supported living placement, she moved in in May and we've not been able to see her since, it runs as though it were a care home because some of the residents (though not her) have medical conditions that make them susceptible.  It doesn't look as though she's going to be able to come see us at Christmas, we couldn't go see her for her 21st Birthday this week... it's going to be tough knowing that she's out there somewhere without us.  She won't care, I don't think, her condition means that she's largely content so long as there aren't significant disruptions to her routine, but it'll feel weird not to have all the kids at home for the first time in more than twenty years.

That said, I'm not sure she'd be particular settled at home with a sixteen month old and a three year old tearing the place up high on mince pies and lemonade!!!

At the same time, it's touch and go whether we'll get down to see my parents or in-laws on Boxing Day, which has become something of a tradition of late, and I confess to being somewhere between ambivalent and actively happy at the prospect of just being able to bunker down at home for the week!

Do you have anyone in a care home who you will not be able to visit this Christmas? Our Down's syndrome son normally joins us for our Christmas festivities on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. But this year it won't happen, fortunately he doesn't seem to bothered about that as he gets on so well with the staff at his care home.

Have you ever reported your neighbours for anything at all? I reported a guy years ago,  who lived not too far from us, after he exposed himself as I was walking past his gate.

I once phoned the Old Bill because my neighbour continuously held loud parties late in the night on weekdays. I normally wouldn't have bothered but my then girlfriend couldn't get any sleep.

Yes, in pool. Many times played against Petri Makkonen who plays in the same club as me. Multiple Finnish champion and  he also won the World Cup of Pool with Mika Immonen a number of years back. Suffice to say I haven't beaten him yet.

I had a Tinky-winky purple diesel Fiesta about ten years ago that lost in a game of Close Encounters of the Deer Kind... bloody deer got up and limped away.  Replaced it with a Honda Jazz which was just not quite as good in every single way, down to and including the speakers on the radio....    Great car that Fiesta.

How many paper books - somewhere in the region of a thousand, I guess, mostly sci-fi and swords-and-sorcery fiction, with a smattering of thrillers handed on from my Dad and then a small range of non-fiction (histories, some pop-philosophy, some software for dummies bits and pieces and then a smattering of oddities).

Anyone else looking at the prospective return to 'normal' after the lockdown with a touch of regret?  I've absolutely loved working from home this much - my commute to the office is approaching two hours each way because of Reading's preposterous traffic situation, and although I typically only had to do it once or twice a week it dragged.  As to the social isolation... I've not really noticed anything except it being a little more difficult to get a booking slot for shopping deliveries.
