That was very interesting - there are too many names for me to follow but these last two years have certainly changed the routine of many players and rankings, etc.

I have to admit I had completely forgotten that the Davis Cup was starting yesterday. With Covid cancellation last year the changes, that started in 2019 didn't get a chance to bed in. Spain losing Alcaraz to Covid affects their chances, given they were already without Nadal and Bautista Agut

Interesting comments from Hewitt about the possibility of it being based in Abu Dhabi for 5 years.

Looking at the David Cup teams, Russia look to be the big favourites. They have two in the top 5 in the rankings, no other team has 2 in the top twenty. While they don't have a specialist doubles pairing, not all teams do.

Other than them USA look a good team, Italy look strong, as do the UK. Any team with Djokovic stands a chance. Had Zverev played, then Germany would look good but he isn't. Note if Berrettini was fit, Italy would look even stronger.

Italy win both singles against US. Very very easy win for Sinner over Isner

So the quarter finals in the Davis Cup are:

Russian Tennis Federation vs Sweden which looks like an easy win for the Russians

UK vs Germany should be won by the UK but Evans is looking vulnerable, if it comes down to the doubles both UK and Germany have 2 doubles specialists in team but neither is a normal partnership

Italy vs Croatia which you would expect the Italians to win both singles BUT Croatia have the number 1 ranked doubles team in the world in Mektić and Pavić so there is an element of extra pressure the singles

Serbia vs Kazakhstan and though Serbia qualified via the best runners up spot, they feel more likely to go through since Djokovic should get a win.

So Gojo, the world 279, has beaten Sonego, the world 27, putting Croatia 1-0 up against Italy, and given the doubles makes them favourites to make the semi finals.

So Sinner managed to beat Cilic in 3 sets, but Mektić and Pavić won as expected so Italy are out.

I hope the British team get to the semi-finals , if not the final.

If they get past Germany, then it is likely that the favourites, the Russian Tennis Federation, will be their opponents in the semi final.

UK 1 - 0 up as Evans easily beats Gojowcyzk. Surprising that Koepfer wasn't playing
