Wimbledon has banned players from Russia and Belarus.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/61161016

Not sure I agree with this. Tennis (in most cases) is very different to, for example the Football World Cup or the Olympics. In the latter athletes compete under the banner of their country and formally represent their country, even in individual sports in the case of the Olympics. They are selected under the auspices of their country, wear kit of the country's team, receive medals in a ceremony with national anthem played and the flag of the country raised.

This is very different to Wimbledon where a competitor competes as themselves, in an individual sport - that they may be from a particular country seems irrelevant - they are not representing that country, they are representing themselves.

The Davis Cup is different, of course, but I'm not sure individual tennis players should be banned from competing in an individual tournament simply because they are Russian.

I'm on the fence currently on the ban. This is a good defence of it.

Raducanu, Evans, and Draper win in Madrid. Big win by Draper over Sonego who is a bit of a clay court specialist
Surprised that Murray has taken a wildcard given the possible impact of clay oourt play on his hip. Interesting first round match up with the returning Thiem, given they are 2 of the 4 slam winners in the men's draw.

Lot of anticipation to see Nadal's early return from injury/surgery.

Murray beat Thiem in straight seats. Tough match next against Shapovalov, but if he wins and Djokovic were to beat Monfils then they would meet in the next round.

Norrie won his first round match which means four players from the UK in the second round men's tournament at Madrid. Not sure if that has happened in the Open era.

Sounds promising - hope to hear of more wins later ...

The defeat of Federer from 2 sets down was one of the greatest matches I've seen.

Raducanu out, Murray through to play Djokovic, big win over Shapovalov. I wonder whether despite its punishing of his hip if clay might suit his 'new' game better.

Very sorry to hear that. Hope it's nothing serious. He would have lost no doubt, but he would have had strong support from those who much admire his taking part and doing well in the last match.

Is this Alcaraz an exciting plaer to watch? Aiming for the top spot it seems. ~Well done, him.

What was the Jocavic - Murray result? Did you watch the match?

Yes, he's a great player to watch, paticularly on clay. Murray has to pulll out of the match with Djokovic because of illness.

Easy win for Alcaraz over Zverev.

Also win in men's doubles by Koolhof, and UK player Neal Skupski, who are leading the ATP Doubles Race by over 1,000 points.

Fascinating match coming up in the Italian Open 1st round with Raducanu 2021 US Open Champion, and Andreescu, 2019 US Open Champion returning from injury again.

Both became champions while teenagers.

just to add to this Andreescu was the first teenager to win a woman's slam title since 2006 and Sharapova doing it. Since then in addition to Raducanu, Swiatek won the French as a teenager.

Also they are both, as is indicated by their names, of Romanian heritage. Both Andreescu's parents are Romanian, while Raducanu's father is.

Good article on the teenage slam winners, both men and women, in the Open Era that the BBC did when Raducanu won the US Open.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/58545598

None in the men's since Nadal in 2005, the question is whether Alcaraz will be the next.

Andreescu wins with Raducanu withdrawing in 2nd set with injury.

Osaka, the 2018 and 2020 US Open Champion also withdrew through injury

Djokovic will drop down to 2nd in the rankings if he loses  to Auger Aliassime today despite Medvedev not playing currently due to surgery.

Andreescu comes up against Swiatek who is on a 25 match winning streak.

Djokovic beats Tsitsipas in straight sets to get his firsr title of 2022.

Swiatek wins, and is now on a 5 tournament, 28 match winning streak. The record in women's tennis in the Open Era  is 74 matches by Martina Navratilova.
