I'm much the same but that one service I have is Amazon Prime and it's on there.

We could have signed up for the free trial I guess, but in practice I'm too tired out to watch much anyway.
Ah, but I was so much older then ... I'm younger than that now

Tiafoe takes 1st set against Nadal. There was some discussion last night on Amazon Prime's coverage about whether Kyrgios was now the favourite. The general feeling was that Nadal was the favourite but given his recent injury and that Kyrgios had win 1 more match that didn't feel right to me.

Somehow would like both Nadal and Tiafoe to win this match. Kyrgios sounds in much better shape than he was at Wimbledon.

2 sets to 1 to Tiafoe currently

The night matches work with my insomnia when it hits. Still find it baffling though that the Jabeur - Kudermetova match didn't start till after 22:00 New York time, and that would have been later if Kyrgios - Medvedev had gone to a 5th set.

Tiafoe beats Nadal, leaving Cilic as the only previous winner left in either men's or women's singles.

And Cilic was knocked out by Alcaraz meaning no previous champions in either men or women's championships at the quarter finals.

I was a bit surprised that Nadal's return happened so sharply and it may be some time before he returns.

Sad to see them both go, Nadal especially. You can't keep pushing your body beyond the limits it can recover from (as I've been finding out).

Ruud and Khachanov into semi finals. If either Ruud or Alcaraz get to the final, they will be the world number 1. If both get there, the winner will be number 1.

And in the women's Garcia, the form player of the North American swing, will play Jabeur.

Sabalenka plays Swiatek. Tiafoe plays Alcaraz. Alcaraz's match with Sinner finished at 2.50 am New York time. Ludicrous.

Women's final between Swiatek and Jabeur. So Putin's PR coup won't happen in the women's.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/62831894

In the men's doubles, Salisbury, the UK's world number 1 ranked doubles player, is into the final. If he wins, he will remain world number 1, if he loses he will be replaced by Neal Skupski, also of the UK, who is on other team in final.

Alcaraz and Ruud into final, so no PR triumph for Putin, but a new man's number 1. The US has been tge 1 slam in the past 16 years not completely dominated by the 'big 5'. No one outwith Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Murray, and Wawrinka has won any of the other 3 slams in that time. Indeed each of those has only ever been won by 4 out of those. The US has been won by all 5, and Cilic, Thiem, and Medvedev. Add to that that none of the quarter finalists this year had ever won a slam, and even with the odd wrinkle of Djokovic's vaccine related absence, and it feels like a new era has properly begun.

https://www.bbc.com/sport/tennis/62846443

Salisbury and Ram retain the men's doubles, meaning Salusbury stays as the number 1 ranked doubles player. Along with that pairing, and Skupski and Koolhof, whom they beat in the final, both of who are certainties to qualify for the year end, Glasspool and Heliovaara are ranked in 7th currently and if they qualify, would mean 3 pairings with a British player. And none of them would be with the most successful British doubles player of recent years, Jamie Murray

Swiatek beats Jabeur in straight sets, and now has more than twice the number of points in this year's race than Jabeur who has the second highest. While that wouldn't quite be true if there had been points for Wimbledon, it's still indicative of a hugely dominant year for Swiatek following Barty's retirement.

It's underlined even more by being nearly 3 times the points of Pegula who is in 3rd place in the race. Oddly Pegula has that position but hasn't won a tournament this year.

And Alcaraz wins and becomes the youngest ever number ranked man by a remarkable 1 year and 137 days.

Uk loses 2-1 to USA in their first round robin over 3 very tight matches. Murray highlights that this was another very late finish.

Not a surprise, and a good way to say goodbye. Be intetesting to see if this means Nadal will play in it.

This is all I can find on Roger's farewell but still a treat:

If the comment is true that he told Rafa 10 days before anyone else about his retirement then Rafa proves to be a trusted friend.

Given I posted on this topic for Susan Doris even more than even self indulgence, I've refrained from posting since she seems likely to be gone forever.

I'll just note that Canada won their first ever Davis Cup at the eeekend and with Auger Aliassime and Shapovalov may well win more. That would be less likely if Russia get allowed back at any time.

Anyway, I won't start a 2023 thread for the reasons above.
