The bad lists of the American Film Institute
« on: January 30, 2022, 03:49:49 AM »
I was checking for a thing I am doung on Facebook when Alan Rickman did Les Liaisons Dangereuses on stage, and I saw that he had been voted 46th best villian in film history in a list collated by the American Film Institute. I thought 'That sounds quite interesting' and clicked on the linked footnote, to end up at a screen with the message in the attachment below.

While it is undoudtedly true that films that are on this lists tend to be dominated by white men, and films made by white men, it's surely a nonsense to remove lists that actually existed?

I'm just surprised that Alan Rickman only ranks (sorry: ranked) 46th. Who were the 45 better screen villains than Hans Gruber?

Anyway, back on topic: I don't know what the AFI plans to do about this. Are they going to diversify the list and perhaps introduce some screen villains from minorities who aren't really worthy of inclusion? Or are they going to retool the list to make sure all the screen villains are white men?
