I'm surprised.

When I first started using this particular word I felt a bit miffed when a well-known newspaper ran an article just a few days later suggesting that this was a good starter word.

A good starter is not too obscure and has no repeated letters (so that if it's wrong at least you discover the status of as many letters as possible), should contain an e, as that's the commonest letter in English, and thus most likely to be there, and should not contain any rare letters such as x and z, for the converse reason, so yes, it's good.
In view of that, I think I'll change my usual starter, as it doesn't contain an e.

Use of common letters and vowels. The word I generally use is SLATE. I'd gusssed from some of Aruntraveller's posts that he generally used something ending in ATE for obvious reasons, and in addition that it looked likely to be IRATE. The E at the end is good as it covers a lot of words, as for me does the S at the start.

I'l know of people who use ADIEU as a starter to cover as many vowels as possible but I prefer to get some consonants knocked out.

Obviously avoid past tense and plurals as there seems to me to be something in the choice of word that avoids those.

ETA - my second choice today was based on me thinking that Aruntraveller's first choice might be IRATE

I think it says somewhere that plurals, at least ones ending in s, are never used.
