Jerry Sadowitz show cancelled
« on: August 14, 2022, 05:05:12 PM »
A bit bemused that the representative of the venue talks about free speech just after they've stopped the show for not being in line with their values. Also the venue knew well what he was like, none of this is a surprise.

From the Pleasance on the cancellation. Quite scary the comment about characters - what will we lose? And how does this fit in with free speech which they say they champion?

Not familiar with his work, but as the venue has had him perform there before they could hardly be unaware of what they were getting.

It would all be a bit silly if it weren't at the same time quite sinister.

One of the issues is that Sadowitz got his prick out. Now having been to a few of his shows, this is not unusual, to the extent that it had been highlighted in the flyer for the show. I really would prefer not to see Sadowitz's prick again but it's one of the risks you take when you go to see him. It also has to remembered that for years one of the biggest shows on the Fringe was Puppetry of the Penis..

Not my scene as far as comedy goes - but niether is censorship.
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

Apparently Jerry Sadowitz couldn't perform because he felt a bit funny. His manager told him to get on stage before it wore off.

So "racism, sexism, homophobia and misogyny" is not all bad and makes for a good evening out?

Again the issue here is the Pleasance knew what they were getting, and the audience did too. I could, having seen Sadowitz a number of times, present a defence of the act but my take is that that's not really the point. I'll defend Roy Chubby Brown's right to perform, and I don't think I could make the same justification.

The Pleasance don't have to have anyone on they don't like. They knew and participated in the marketing of this as a show that was likely to offend. They then hold themselves up as exemplars of free speech.

Where do they claim to be exemplars of "free speech"? In the Guardian article they say that although they have previously had him on, the new act was not acceptable to them - though one suspects this may only be due to the number of complaints.

People change with the times and "free speech" is also a moveable feast.

Link below has their statement on free speech.

Sadowitz has been performing this sort of stuff for 39 years. It's not a radical new departure so in no sense could they be surprised at it.

Is there a magic number of complaints, it's difficult to know comparitively how many complaints there are though I did oncw attend a gig of his where half the audience walked out. That was 37 years ago.

I have issues with free speech, in that I don't think I or anyone believes in absolute free speech i.e. all speech with no consequences, but not sure a comedy venue saying they don't censor comedians has much wiggle room in terms of nuance here

Fair enough...

The other thing that is odd is that people should buy tickets to see him, knowing his reputation and kind of comedy, then walk out or complain.

I expect he gets laughs by making stupid and outrageous statements but then, to get audiences year after year, has to keep pushing the boundaries. Then, at some point he is bound to upset enough of his audience such that he gets chucked out or banned.

Again the act hasn't changed much since I first saw him. And I would suggest it is easier to shock then it was 40 years ago. I don't think your characterisation of his act is correct. Again though the justification of it seems off point to me.

I'd feel more cheated if I'd booked to see Jerry Sadowitz or, say, Frankie Boyle and was then presented with something as anodyne as Michael McIntyre.

People upset at Kevin Bridges.
I'm only upset by knee jerking idiots reading the daily Heil.
