The true horror won't bew seen till next breeding season.
Gannets mate for life, so I suspect next year will show just how bare the rock is.
With any luck, the birds from the last two or three broods will be less affected, since they would have been too immature to return to the rock this year to breed.

Well, it's very sad and all that, but since it's not our fault for once, should we not just let it run its course, this being just the nastier side of nature?

Eh? How can flu spreading from bird to bird (the bird being the natural resevoir of the flu virus) be the fault of humans?

Because the virus became active in chicken farms - which are not natural - and wild birds caught it.
Their migratory routes brought them in contact with other species.
