Ironic that he is rightly lauded for his part in ending the USSR and Iron Curtain (even though unintentionally) in the West, but largely disparaged in Russia.
"for, as long as but a hundred of us remain alive, never will we on any conditions be brought under English rule. It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

How you view Gorbachev will largely depend upon where you're from. Our image of him in the West is a mainly positive one, a reflection of the hope we had at the time that things were really changing. You'll get a very different view of him in Eastern Europe though, where many will tell you he was a criminal, who tried to prolong the existence of the Soviet Union and sent tanks into Riga, Vilnius, Tbilisi, Alma-Ata, and other cities resulting in many innocent deaths.
Peace through superior firepower.
Do not believe anything until the Kremlin denies it.
