Elon Musk: tech wizard or numpty?
« on: October 17, 2022, 11:47:36 AM »
Elon Musk has been in the news more than most recently. Rather than have a discussion specifically about his attempt to buy/not buy Twitter or the controversy surrounding Starling in Ukraine, I thought it would be more fun to have a poll.

Twitter is effectively unusable unless you pay for it with this announcement, and not great even if you do.

I think his action means that any twitter links I have put up to twitter on here in the past will no longer work for those who don't have a twitter account.

Definitely a nympty! He spent 40 billion dollars to make Twitter worse and seems intent on turning it into an echo chamber for racists and conspiracy theorists.

Clearly an entrepreneur who got lucky, but also a total numpty, and an obnoxious one to boot.

So the links would now seem to work if you don't have an account but Musk's arsery has broken it for me. Deactivated account

Are they mutually exclusive categories? He's probably both.
When conspiracy nuts start spouting their bollocks, the best answer is "That's what they want you to think".

That's true, except he's not a tech wizard.

My account is effectively locked at the moment. I can tweet but I can't reply to, like or retweet others' tweets. Twitter is seriously broken.

And now I can't even tweet anymore.

Try logging back out, and logging on a couple of times. When I was trying to sort out deactivating my account, that seemed to clear some of the issues - not that it stopped me deactivating the account

A very biased take but one that makes a lot of valid points

I don't know about 'biased' but 'deluded'. I read "...the service that not so long ago was the best way to take in breaking news and find audiences for serious conversations..." and had to check that I'd accessed the right article, because I don't recall a time when Twitter was not just a cesspool of people trying to shout hate louder than anyone else and police their own pet peeves.

I think it was the best for breaking news, simply for the size of it.

The points, I think, that he makes that are valid are the ones around Musk's decisions, his methods, or lack of in making them, and the problems with the 'business model'.

That's never been my experience of Twitter. Maybe I just followed the wrong people.

It used to be useful to me mainly as a way to follow what my entertainment people were doing. It's especially important at festivals for announcing changes in the schedule and so forth. Not sure it's going to be any good this year.

X marks the spot

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66296468

Some of the ideas I have read about this:

You won't tweet anymore, you'll X-crete. And your posts will be known as X-cretions. We won't have threads but X-crement.

An X is just a sans serif Swastika.

There will no longer be Twitter users but X-users (not to be confused with ex-users).
