If we are talking about a product I forever associate with Monty Python it is apparently used in the way described for various US organisations.

Sorry my fault, got confused. However, the internet agrees with both of us. Bloody useless.

It is either a contraction or an acronym. Depending on the source.

The acronym as everyone has now played (I think) is "Specially Processed American Meat" or alternatively the contraction is "SPiced hAM".

Although I have seen "Slimy Processed Anaemic Mucus" offered as an alternative.

Funnily enough, it didn't occur to me that the word wasn't about email spam, the etymology of which is unknown but probably comes from the Monty Python spam sketch.

The acronyms you have suggested are all actually backronyms. The origin of the term "spam" in respect of canned meat was known only to the inventor of the term and a few other execs in the company that made it.

The guy who invented it knew where it came from.

There's no known acronym that actually works that can be traced to the creation of the product. Therefore, it is not an acronym, at least, the NYT shouldn't be calling it an acronym.

Dead easy, for a nice change - and purple, supposedly the hardest, was the easiest. In fact, I got all the colours reversed, in terms of supposed difficulty!
