Realistically, he's got to get himself elected as a Conservative MP before he can become leader. Competition for safe Tory seats is going to be fierce at the next general election.

Montgomerie's comment is about the desire of sone of the Tory members and by having the words 'if they could' acknowledges that they can't currently.

So he rejoins the Tories after the election. Then he needs to wait for a by election to get into parliament. Then he has to challenge whoever is the leader of the party. It is possible he might be the leader for the 2029/2030 election. He'll be in his late 60's by then. Too old IMO.

I think he will in the main be enjoying the adulation, free drink, and the ability to earn increased money writing about the future of the Tory party. Were it to come about for the election after the next one, he's still just a lad in US yetms.
