There is no secret. You just have to get a good group of players together with a good manager. It will happen completely by chance most of the time, but having a large player base and being rich certainly helps.
So all of it applies to Scotland at various times but we've still never made out group stage.

Scotland is a country of about five million people and a fairly dysfunctional football league without loads of money. Frankly, I'm pleasantly surprised when Scotland qualifies for a major tournament.

Two points to note.

In group C, seven goals scored in total.

In  group D, seven goals scored last night.

Second place in group C was determined by disciplinary record.

FTFY
You could take that 2 ways. I suspect you are looking at the downbeat one. I think that overall the favourites haven't performed consistently. The Spanish in being the only team to win 3 matches stand put but we'll see if that continues. Austria and Georgia stand out for playing above expectations.

Yes, I was looking at the downbeat one (or upbeat, if you are Rachel Corsie). England have played pretty poorly so far and will need to up their game to have a good chance of progressing further.

As covered, this seems more widespread than England . You look at teams like France, Italy, Belgium, Netherlands all played quite poorly.

I don't support any of those other teams. In fact, I am usually quite pleased when they play badly. I do want to see England do well though.

Given the number of international tournaments Scotland haven't qualified for, I think I find it easier to be looking at other teams. I'm quite torn here because I like good teams, and recently England have been a good team, and I like Southgate and the team generally, and you look at the players and they should be great but....

If they continue to play as they have it won't bother me if they go out but I'd like to see them change it up.

I look forward to the list of banned goal celebrations. I suspect it will be shorter than Roses might want

The top half of draw has with Spain, Germany, France, and Portugal - 7 World Cups, and 9 Euros. The bottom half with England, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Turkey, 1 World Cup, and 1 Euro.

Not bothering to work out World Wars.

Demiral banned for 2 games, Bellingham a slap on the wrist with 1 match ban suspended.

And while the new star scored to help his team into the final of the Euros, across the world the old star scored to help his side into the final of the Copa America, and the photos of them when the old was the young star, and the new a baby in swaddling clothes appeared

Why the fuck have we gone all passive again in this second half?
Peace through superior firepower.
Do not believe anything until the Kremlin denies it.

Yeah. Brilliant by Watkins.
Very clever from The Killers. I do wonder what they would have done had England lost but I suspect they would have played Mr Brightside as an attempt at consolation.
