Olympics 2024
« on: April 10, 2024, 01:27:51 PM »
World Athletics to give prize money at the Olympics. Feels odd but the idea of it being for amateurs was long gone.

The amateur code in sport sounds noble - doing it for love, not money - but in practise tends to exclude working-class athletes, who have to work for a living and have limited time for training, and favour the wealthy, for the opposite reason. Politics, likewise, was largely limited to the rich until MPs were paid.
When politicians talk about making tough decisions, they mean tough for us, not for them.

As noted, the Olympics being for amateurs is long gone. Having prize money at the Olympics is a different question. Arguably, winning at the Olympics in a high profile sport is going to do more for an athletes earning power than any prize but at the same time, if people are making profits from your effort, some form of reward seems only fair.

And what are the chances that President Macron will open the games by parachuting from a helicopter accompanied by Chief Inspector Maigret?

Win for Spain, draw for Argentina v Morocco in the football. Draw for France in the rugby 7s vs USA. I think France and USA are playing this evening in the football as well. If It's a draw there, not sure what makes best of three.

Ireland beat Sth Africa in the rugby 7s. The sports that happen before the Opening Ceremony always have a nicely illicit feel for me.
