Strong language from Shabana Mahmood but it looks entirely deserved. Tom Tugendhat's complaints are rich coming from someone whose govt was already doing this, and got into the mess in the first place.

I recall reading, a few months ago, about the Dutch prison system and how well it performed in comparison with the British system.

One point that was made was recidivism. It is almost unknown in the Netherlands whereas it is a significant contribution to prison occupation in the UK. This is because considerable effort is made in the Dutch system to educate, counsel and train prisoners so that when they re-enter the outside world they can do so with a different set of values and skills and make positive contributions to society.

Whilst it might work for some of them, I suspect many of the inmates have no interest in being educated and learning life skills to help them find jobs. But hopefully I am wrong, if it is tried out in the UK and it works.

Surely the point is whether it works better for more people and reduces recidivism as a whole. We have high recidivism rates, whatever we are doing here isn't working.
