Who will be next England manager?
« on: July 16, 2024, 08:13:27 PM »
Southgate is a tough act to follow, and while there are a number of excellent candidates, covered in the link below, there's no one I would say is the obvious candidate.

I would vote for Guardiola. It kills two birds with one stone: finding a good manager for England and depriving Manchester City of a good manager.

Who won't be singing the national anthem, much to some people's horror.

Pep stays where he is thank you very much.

He’ll leave because Man City will get relegated for all the cheating they have done.

Good luck to him, I say.

The job of England manager is definitely a poisoned chalice.

Some reaction

That's very funny.

My thought is that, if you want to win international tournaments, you employ the best people eligible to do each job. Since the manager doesn't have to be English, just get the best one available. I'm not sure that Tuchel is the best one available, But I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves it one way or the other.

I agree.

I have no idea why there is a dearth of English managers of the highest quality, but it is hard to argue that there have been any 'top' English managers for decades, given that no English manager has won any of the major club leagues (e.g. England, Spain, Germany, France, Italy), nor the Champions League, nor major international tournament (Euros, World Cup) for over 30 years. The last two being the two Howards - Wilkinson with Leeds in 92 and Kendall with Everton in 87.

So makes sense to look elsewhere for successful managers. Think there may be better managers than Tuchel - but he's won more top trophies (4, 1 Champions League; 1 Bundesliga and 2 French titles) than all English managers combined since, I think 1984 (the two Howards, Terry V in Spain and Joe Fagan with Liverpool).

There are very few English managers who could even be considered. You have Eddie Howe, Sean Dyche, Graham Potter perhaps other than complete punts - and I think Howe didn't want the job for the poisoned chalice reason.
They took a punt with Southgate, and it worked out pretty well but Tuchel seems a better bet than anyone English at this time.

Agree - see my earlier comment.

The only Englishman close would surely be Howe - although he's won nothing (well nothing of note!). But he's been praised as a person getting the most out of limited resources, e.g. at Bournemouth. That isn't really analogous with England where they have some world beating players - so it is more analogous to managing one of the top clubs. How you turn a set of really very good players into a world beating side, rather than how you turn a set of rather limited players into an acceptable side.

Agree

Part of the reason for the dearth of good English managers is surely that the top English league hires mainly non English managers in part because of the amount of money that is available?
