Both a shock and not a shock. Enormously influential politician, sometime genius, sometime arse.

Will take me a wee while to process this news.

Poor Nicola - she'll now have to find something to say - should be interesting viewing for platitude enthusiasts.

For me, one of the four most influential politicians in the UK of my lifetime, and the one that currently I like the most, given the others, that's not the highest bar.

Another in the line of male Scottish politicians who have died young, and he's the oldest of those I'm thinking of.

Alba is fucked, if it wasn't before, and it's not great news for the SNP as it doesn't allow for any real rapprochement. The mad ones will say Sturgeon killed him, and the mad ones on the other side will celebrate that she did.

Lots of gracious tributes from some surprising places tonight, Douglas Ross did very well. Perhaps Richard Tice saying he had become a friend may not be the tribute some might hope for but in the end that's not surprising for Alex.

Andrew Neil said nice things about him - which surprised me a little. I suppose, given how mercurial he was, many of us here in Scotland will be familiar with the robust politician but, and even allowing for 'not speaking ill of the dead, some of the tributes from those who weren't political bedfellows do seem genuinely and surprisingly warm.

Not a bad tribute from John Swinney but that reflection needs to happen

Very angry article from Kevin McKenna illustrating the divide in the independence movement.
