An embarrassing first effort - hope to improve on this score!

To add - it didn't take that long really, since I did the school run and then went shopping between starting and, eventually, getting the answer.

I think the best way to play this is by halves - start with a word in the middle of the alphabet, and, assuming it's wrong, that eliminates half the alphabet. Then go for a word in the middle of what's left, and so on.
