Hello all,

Nice to see old monikers & new ones. But who are the oldies in disguise?

I'm now all unpacked and have a kettle point handy. Take your shoes off & get comfy.
(errrr not you Gonnagle, you been down the allotment again right?)

Hiya flyinghigh here, just joined.

A bit about me,  a woman, non-believer, not in the first flush of youth. I heard about this forum on another one where I post.

I look forward to the discussions.

Hi flying high. I wonder what the male/female numbers are here.  I've just been to a Humanist Group meeting this afternoon, which was an end of year debate proposedand opposed by members (plus a cream tea afterwards) and there is a preponderance of males. Also I went to a JREF two-day conference in London in 2009 and at a rough guess I'd say it was three-quarters male! Unfortunately, I must have been almost the oldest there... ah, such a shame!!

Glad to see you've made it.
Hope you enjoy this home from home.

Sorry, ad-Orientem,
My screenreader read your username as I originally spelled it.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Again, welcome.

Hi, Keturah
Nice to have you with us.

BTW, your Username sounds vaguely familiar - anything to do with Egyptian mythology?
( There's a minor Egyptian deity running through what's left of my mind, and it has your username )

Thank you Jim and hiya Floo!   :D

Jim, Keturah bore Abraham six sons.  That is the source of my choice for a board name.

I'm trying to get to grips with how this board works - can you tell me how to 'ignore'?  Not that I want to use it just now, you understand.  8)

Hi, Keturah.
It's just that 'Ket' and 'Ketty' are Egyptian names. ( Ketty or Khety was the name of four ninth dynasty Kings...sorry, geek mode, need a mars bar.)
You need to go into your profile settings; it should be there.
I don't use it - the only thing I ignore is spam.

And I'm not that up on Genesis names. I have enough trouble with Scots.

I did use "Khety" as a nom de plume on a site once, simply because the relatively obscure Ninth Dynasty rarely gets mentioned, and I felt that using a name such as Menes would be frankly rather pretentious. I like to think that at least one of the Khety's would have appreciated the tribute :)

You mean I'm not the only geek on here?

I thought I was unique...
Well, nearly as daft as Gonnagle, but I haven't been on as long as him.
Just give me time.

Seriously, HWB, I've been fascinated with Egypt - no, I'm not a pyramidiot - most of my life.
I studied Egyptoligy at uni, but had to drop out for health reasons. I still keep in touch, though.

Got the 'ignore' thing - thanks!  :)

Interesting about the Egyptian thing - perhaps the Biblical Keturah's name is connected to the Egyptians' use of a similar name in some way: one being the derivation of the other, maybe?

I doubt it; the ninth dynasty was probably several centuries before Abraham's time.
BTW; useless fact of the day;
Did you know Sheshonq 1 ( Biblical 'Shishak', 1 Kings 5 ) Who invaded Israel in Rehoboham's time, had a gold death mask?
The wealth of Nubia had long gone; so it's interesting to speculate whether the gold came from the Jerusalem temple.

end of useless fact of the day.

Hello there, new forum member here.

I frequented the BBC message boards under the name johannes_de_silentio - I doubt anyone will remember me.

Anyway, new forum, new name, and I hope these boards will be as interesting as the BBC ones were.
